Many communities are celebrating World Fair Trade Day a few days before or after May 8th. WFTD is the largest FT event in N. America, with over 65,000 people having participated in 2009. Fair Trade My HomeWorld Fair Trade Day in N. America this year is accompanied by the theme, “Fair Trade My Home.” When we expand Fair Trade at home, we not only support the people who make the items we consume and enjoy, we also support the environment, women’s rights, children’s rights, cultural dignity and peace building. That’s a powerful thing to do by committing to use Fair Trade items at home. Commit to expanding your use of Fair Trade soap, sugar, clothes, toys, coffee, chocolate, baskets, picture frames, bananas, rice, tea, soccer balls, flowers, wine and more! High quality, Fair Trade products are available for every room in your home. Retail sales in the U.S. of Fair Trade products surpassed $1 billion per year. “Fair Trade My Home” ContestsJoin thousands of people to show how Fair Trade works in your home, and win Fair Trade prizes. Competitions are tailored to both individuals as well as organizations in various photo and pledge contests. Get together with friends, faith-based groups, schools, businesses and neighbors to share new ways of bringing Fair Trade home. Events such as festivals, fashion shows, speeches, food and drink tastings, film showings, sports games, neighborhood crawls, spa nights and concerts are being planned to give people ideas and products to use at home.
