Event:

Black Gold Film Screening
On Tuesday, May 8 the IHM Justice, Peace and Sustainability Office will host a free screening of the critically acclaimed film Black Gold at 6:30 p.m. in the IHM Motherhouse Community Room. After oil, coffee is the most actively traded commodity in the world with $80 billion in retails sales. But for every $3 cup of coffee, a coffee farmer receives only 3 cents. The rest of the money goes to four giant conglomerates which control the global coffee market. Tracing the path of the coffee consumed each day to the farmers who produce it, Black Gold asks viewers to wake up and smell the coffee by examining the unjust conditions under which it is produced. Black Gold also offers an introduction into the rapidly growing fair trade coffee market which enables consumers to use their purchasing power to ensure just wages and the protection of human rights for the worlds coffee farmers. After watching Black Gold, coffee drinkers will never be able to take another sip without thinking about the farmers who grew the beans and of their own responsibility to persuade coffee companies to be better global corporate citizens.
