World Fair Trade Week
Amherst is celebrating it’s first World Fair Trade Week as a Fair Trade Town May 3-10 As part of Amherst Fair trade Partnership’s program of “Putting a Human Face on Fair Trade”, there will be celebrations and events with free coffee, chocolate, flowers and live music. May 8th Dean’s Beans “Raising the Bar” Coffee Celebration at the Black Sheep Thursday May 8th from 8-10pm with Markamusic performing live music from Central and South America. Dean Cycon will be "unveiling" a blend from a Peruvian Coffee and Cacao cooperative and announcing the first long term contract between a farm cooperative and a fair trade roaster at the event at the Black Sheep. The manager of the Peruvian cooperative will be present. May 9th Pierce Brothers Roasters will be sponsoring a celebration with live music, free coffee and chocolate at the Loose Goose Cafe, Friday May 9th from 6-8pm The manager of the Peruvian cooperative will also be present. May 9th UMass Students for Fair Trade along with Earthfoods and People’s Market will be hosting a fair trade lunch from 11:30-2:30 on Friday May 9th in the UMass campus center. The farmer/manager from Peru will be present May 10th "Chocolate Country", http://www.chocolatecountry film.com/ (watch the trailer), an upbeat documentary on a Cacao Cooperative in the Dominican Republic. The producers of the film, Jill Higgins and Joe Blotnick and the director Robin Blotnick will be present and leading a discussion after the film. Complimentary Fair Trade coffee and chocolate will be given out. We will be taking a break at 3pm to join in the World’s Largest Coffee Break. Special admission price of $3 includes Fair Trade coffee and chocolate May 10th World’s Biggest Coffee Break- Amherst cafes, restaurants and stores will be participating in an attempt to break the Guiness Book of Worlds Records for the World’s Largest Coffee Break. May 3rd - May 10th Tabling on the Amherst Town Commons from 11am-2pm. Information on Fair Trade coffee, chocolate flowers and other products will be available as will a map as to where to find these products in Amherst. Free sample chocolate and flowers will be given out at the table. Live music will be happening at some Fair Trade store and restaurants. The Peruvian farmer/manager will be present on May 8th along with Dean Cycon to answer questions.
