Oikocredit is the largest international private provider of microcredit in the world. Small loans for income-generating projects to poor people in Asia, Africa and Latin America go a long way to improve health, nutrition, education, housing and self-esteem.

Oikocredit began making loans to cooperatives that have become Fair Trade as early as 1976. Today we loan to over 45 Fair Trade cooperatives.

Perhaps your church serves and sells Fair Trade coffee or chocolate. Much of that coffee is coming from Fair Trade cooperatives funded by Oikocredit.

We would like to invite you and your church to participate in Oikocredit Fair Trade Sunday in October. October is Fair Trade month in the United States. Your church could announce a mission moment, have a special prayer, read together a responsive reading, incorporate or use a sermon which we will provide or do all of these and other liturgical practices as you decide. We will send to you all of these resources for your use and adaptation. And you could choose which Sunday in October 2008 fits your schedule best among the dates October 5, 12, 19, or 26.

We hope to have as many churches and congregations participating as possible. We would appreciate it if you could discuss your participation with people in your church and contact us for resources. We would also welcome your help towards informing other congregations in your community, city, region, state or denomination. We would be glad to work with you.

Oikocredit Fair Trade Sunday services will be celebrated throughout the world in 2008. Groups and churches in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Middle East and Pacific Islands will join us. Our international campaign will lift up the importance of Fair Trade/Fair Finance and our unique commitment and mission to reduce global poverty. Your participation will be greatly appreciated and recognized.

Oikocredit strongly supports Fair Trade. We want to actively promote Fair Trade within the religious communities in the United States. We welcome your involvement and feedback. Please let us know how we can be supportive and how we can cooperate together.
