Student and Producer Scholarships for the

2010 Fair Trade Futures Conference

From September 10-12, 2010, the Fair Trade Resource Network (FTRN) and ten partner organizations will bring together 751+ entrepreneurs, producers, students, academics, non- governmental organizations, media representatives, consumers, and activists in Boston, MA for the 2010 Fair Trade Futures Conference!

The conference organizers are offering a limited number of scholarships for North American students and for Fair Trade producers/artisans/farmers from outside of Canada and the United States. Each scholarship will pay for one person’s conference registration fees (which include meals). Support is not available at this time for costs associated with travel, accommodations, or other expenses. To seek support for these additional expenses, please see the Other Resources for Applicants section below.

The scholarship program seeks to assist Fair Trade artisans and farmers from around the world, as well as North American students, defray some of the costs of attending the conference. Students who are not selected for scholarships will still enjoy a discounted registration rate offered by the conference.

Scholarship Program Schedule

Below are the key dates for important deadlines in the scholarship program:

December 1, 2009 - scholarship program begins accepting applications for Round 1

February 14, 2010 - scholarship applications due for Round 1

March 15, 2010 - scholarship recipients announced from Round 1

May 30, 2010 - deadline for Round 1 recipients to accept scholarships

July 15, 2010 - scholarship applications due for Round 2

July 31, 2010 - scholarship recipients announced from Round 2

August 15, 2010 - deadline for Round 2 recipients to accept scholarships

September 1, 2010 - some applicants on the waiting list are notified of last-minute scholarships if space is available

There will be two application rounds. Applicants not selected in Round 1 will automatically be entered as candidates for Round 2.

Who Qualifies for Scholarships

There are two ways to qualify for a scholarship, if you meet the conditions listed below.

Student Eligibility

Person must be a high school-, university- or graduate-level student enrolled as of March 15, 2010, at an educational institution in Canada or the United States.

Students enrolled in educational institutions outside of North America are still welcome to attend the conference at the discounted student registration rate.

Producer Eligibility

Person must live and work outside of Canada or the United States.

Person must be employed or contracted by an organization affiliated with the Fair Trade movement (examples: members of the World Fair Trade Organization, members of the Fair Trade Federation, cooperatives on the Fairtrade Labeling Organization registry, and others).

People not meeting these conditions are still welcome to attend the conference.

Scholarship Evaluation Criteria

Criteria to be used in selecting scholarship recipients:

-          Financial need

-          Life perspective person would bring to conference, so as to increase diversity (region, gender, affiliated organizations, product made, field of study, etc.)

-          Degree of involvement in Fair Trade

-          Earlier date application was submitted

At the Conference

FTRN will coordinate the payment of scholarships with the conference organizers. Scholarship recipients, upon arrival to the conference, must present a government-issued photo ID, which will be used to find the recipient’s name on a list of scholarship winners.  Student scholarship recipients must, in addition, present the most recent student ID card.
