Traditions Cafe & World Folk Art will offer the complimentary drinks Saturday as part of an international coffee break to celebrate World Fair Trade Day.

Alleviating poverty; World Fair Trade Day being celebrated in Port Colborne and Welland this weekend

World Fair Trade Day is being celebrated at the Caf‚ on Main with music, fair trade products for sale and information about how supporting fair trade can help alleviate poverty for workers in developing countries.

The event, which will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being hosted in partnership with Notre Dame College School’s fair trade club and Jennifer Camplin of Fenwick Village Coffee Roasters. Patti Fagan, owner of Caf‚ on Main, said she was discussing World Fair Trade Day with Notre Dame religion teacher Carol Berkhout when she discovered students were hoping to have the record for the greatest number of fair trade transactions on fair trade day. It’s time for fair trade

Land and water conservation, environmental education and the common good of our community are values shared by residents of Amherst. We might add to that list social justice and economic well-being. These are topics that are spoken of in this newspaper, in Amherst’s Town Meeting, and not infrequently in the coffee shops and restaurants. Amherst residents care for the quality of life here, and Amherst is seen as a progressive community.

These same values of caring for the land and environment, for the common good and for each other, are shared in communities worldwide. Families and farmers living in developing countries, who provide us with some of our daily consumed items, share these ideals as well. However, because of social and economic injustice, many can’t send their children to school, have to work in dangerous and unhealthy conditions, and are not fairly compensated for their work. Changing the world one purchase at a time

Imagine being able to help fight poverty by shopping. Members of the Fair Trade Federation have taken that idea and turned it into a network of businesses that offers products from sources that directly benefit workers in impoverished nations.

On May 10, people in 70 countries will mark World Fair Trade Day to highlight the importance and advantages of fair trade. The event will include an attempt to break the record for the world’s biggest coffee break, a feat designed mainly to bring more attention to the cause. (more…)
