“Raise the Bar, Hershey” Campaign Increases Pressure on Company

Yesterday the campaign released its second alternative corporate social responsibility report for Hershey – STILL Time to Raise the Bar: The REAL CSR report for The Hershey Company. The report highlights Hershey’s ongoing failure to trace its supply chain and stop child labor.  The campaign also calls out Hershey as the laggard in the industry—being the only major chocolate company that has failed to adopt ANY third party certifications for its cocoa.

It’s been one year since Green America launched the Raise the Bar, Hershey! Campaign and called on supporters to join in telling Hershey to stop using child, trafficked, and forced labor. You have shown up in BIG way:

  • More than 50,000 of you have signed petitions to the CEO of Hershey
  • More than 2,500 of you hosted film screenings of The Dark Side of Chocolate in your communities, to call attention to this issue
  • Hundreds of you have called the Hershey Customer Service hotlline requesting a Fair Trade Hershey bar
  • And a countless number of you have shifted to supporting Fair Trade chocolate companies, voting with your dollars for a better world.

Finally, Monday, September 19th will mark the ten-year anniversary of the signing of the Harkin-Engel Protocol—an agreement signed by the country’s largest chocolate companies, including Hershey, to put an end to forced child labor on cocoa farms by 2005.  Now, six years later, Hershey is still dragging its feet and hundreds of thousands of children continue to work long, grueling hours in the cocoa fields of West Africa, according to a report funded by the US Department of Labor.
