Fair Trade Somewhat Represented at Major Specialty Food Trade Show

North America’s largest specialty food & beverage event, the Summer Fancy Food Show, took place in Washington, DC, July 10-12. Four committed Fair Trade brands exhibited their wares: Canaan Fair Trade, Divine Chocolate, Equal Exchange, and Theo Chocolate. Another 9 companies sold some products that are certified Fair Trade. For comparison, around 100 companies selling certified Fair Trade products typically exhibit at Natural Products Expo East or West, and the Specialty Coffee Association of America trade show.

Theo Chocolate saw one of its Fair Trade products win a sofi award, given annually to outstanding specialty foods and beverages of the year. For the confection category, Theo’s Ghost Chili Caramels, earned the top honor. Over 2,326 entries competed in 33 award categories.

Summer Fancy Food Show showcases over 180,000 products including confections, cheese, coffee, snacks, spices, ethnic, natural, organic and more. The show also claims 2,400 exhibitors, 80 countries represented and 24,000 attendees.
