Summer Campaign “We Want More From Our S’mores” Is Back

Global Exchange launched the annual S’mores  campaign to begin Memorial Day weekend.

Are you ready for some summer fun?  We Want More from our S’mores is back, to help you kick off your summer in a fun, Fair Trade fashion.  After all, what says summer more than s’mores?  It’s a classic, essential summer treat.

Please help the Raise the Bar Hershey Campaign (www.raisethebarhershey.org) reach the goal of making at least 1,500 Fair Trade S’mores.

Your delicious s’mores will help raise awareness and hold Hershey accountable for failing to eliminate child and forced labor from its supply chain and encourage the company to achieve Fair Trade certification.

How to participate:

  1. Savor the chocolatey, gooey pleasure of Fair Trade s’mores anytime from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day weekend.  Include Fair Trade s’mores in your barbeques and campfires this summer.  Or plan a We Want More from Our S’mores picnic in the park (or in the kitchen) or other event with friends, family, coworkers, or the neighborhood.  (Event planning checklist available at  http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/cocoa/SmoresEventChecklist.pdf) Check out these videos to see how much fun you’ll have:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx5QRzyDO6o or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRzbjdBENoM
  2. Let the s’mores be counted!  Count the s’mores you eat and register them online at www.globalexchange.org/smores
  3. During your s’mores gathering, collect signatures on petitions asking Hershey to step up and become Fair Trade Certified, available at http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/cocoa/smoresproject.html
  4. Screen the Dark Side of Chocolate. Before or after you make your tasty Fair Trade s’mores, show this film to educate others about child labor in the cocoa fields and explain why it is so important to choose Fair Trade Certified chocolate. http://www.raisethebarhershey.org/take-action-host-a-screening/

More resources, including where to purchase Fair Trade certified chocolate for your s’mores, a Fair Trade campfire song, suggestions for summer camp counselors and youth group leaders to integrate We Want More from Our S’mores and other Fair Trade activities into summer programming, etc, visit <http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/cocoa/smoresproject.html>.

Have you heard about Raise the Bar Hershey Campaign’s upcoming rally in NYC’s Times Square, Wednesday June 8th at 10:30 AM?  Come join us in front of the Hershey Store and ask Hershey to make the switch to Fair Trade.  For more information about the rally visit http://www.raisethebarhershey.org/rally/

Also, there are 2 petitions on Change.org calling for Fair Trade chocolate. One asks celebrity chefs (specifically Paula Deen, Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse and Rachael Ray) to make Fair Trade s’mores this summer as a way of spreading the word about Fair Trade chocolate. It’s online here: http://www.change.org/petitions/celeb-chefs-paula-deen-bobby-flay-rachael-ray-and-emeril-make-fair-trade-smores-this-summer.  Another petition calls on Cosi to switch to Fair Trade chocolate, especially for it’s S’mores, and that petition is online here: http://www.change.org/petitions/cosi-restaurants-stop-child-labor-use-fair-trade-chocolate-to-make-your-smores.

  1. I absolutely love this!

Nothing better than getting kids involved in a campaign that affects them as well as gives them an opportunity to make a difference.

Such lovely news this morning – thank you!
