FLO and FSC Pilot Dual Certified Timber in Chile

Fairtrade International (FLO) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recently cooperated to offer dual certification for timber sourced from a pilot project in Chile. The first purchase has been transacted with a Swedish furniture company, Kahrs. The Fair Trade Certification by FLO seems to be its first in the timber industry.  See Kahrs press release.

Novel Joint Statement Issued by FLO, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ

In February 2011, the ISEAL Stakeholders’ Workshop in Bern, Switzerland saw Fairtrade, Sustainable Agriculture Network(SAN)/Rainforest Alliance and UTZ CERTIFIED release a joint statement that publicly acknowledged their aligned goal of transforming the world’s production systems and value chains to make them more sustainable. The certifiers recognize the market competition between themselves, and view it as healthy for innovation and diversity. They reject harmonization of standards, but intend to work to reduce certification costs for producers. See the full Joint Statement.

Fair Trade Resource Network has updated its free Power Point show, “Overview of Fair Trade in North America.” The show is the only known,  free one available with such scope. Thousands of people download and use the show each year.

FTF Announces Winners of 3 Annual Awards

During its annual conference in May, the Fair Trade Federation announced the winners of its 3 awards for members. Eight companies were nominated in the field of Best Product Design; and Indego Africa took home the 2011 award for their Nicole Miller Bracelets. Four Corners of the World Fair Trade Store took home the award for Best Public Education Program in 2010 for their curriculum development, speakers’ bureau, and lending library. Handmade Expressions was honored for its work with solar panels, access to electricity, and healthcare in India for the 2011 Most Positive Change Created in a Producer Community Award.

Ten Businesses Join FTF in April and May

Since the end of March, 10 businesses became members of the Fair Trade Federation.

1000th Fair Trade Town in the World to Declare on June 4

On June 4, towns across six continents will be simultaneously declaring their Fair Trade status to mark the 1,000th Fair Trade Town in the world! There are more than 20 declared towns in Fair Trade Towns USA, and scores of coalitions seeking such status. You can join in the celebrations in two ways.

Sign this petition, to be presented to the G20 Agricultural ministerial meeting on behalf of the Fair Trade Town movement, and add your own creative ‘Make Trade Fair’ message on June 4.

Hundreds of WFTD Events Involve 50,000 People & Counting…

Hundreds of World Fair Trade Day events took place in the US & Canada from May 1-15, as Fair Trade advocates celebrated the benefits of Fair Trade and built awareness of this hopeful way of doing business. With the largest number of events and participants taking place on May 14, actual World Fair Trade Day, N. America has already involved over 50,000 people – and we’re still counting! As reports are emailed to wftday@ftrn.org, the attendance tracker will be updated through the end of May.

St. Michael’s Church to Host the Third Annual Fair Trade Festival for WFTD in Cary, NC

St. Michael’s Church will be hosting the third annual Fair Trade festival on May 15, offering samples of coffee, supplied by Larry’s Beans, and selling Fair Trade coffee, tea, chocolate and consignment crafts via SERRV. The celebration, expecting around 500 attendees, will have children’s activities, and drawings for door prizes donated by local retailers. The festival will be aiming to not only celebrate Fair Trade but also to educate and provide information to the local community on Fair Trade. More at Cary Fair Trade Festival.

WHEAT to Take a Fair Trade Coffee Break and Showcase Artisans Pictures and Stories in Phoenix, AZ, for WFTD

On May 14 WHEAT will be hosting a Fair Trade coffee break where around 500 attendees are invited to stop by, have a cup of hot or iced coffee, and learn more about Fair Trade.  The coffee break will also exhibit photos from serrv.org featuring artisan’s pictures and stories. WHEAT has made the pictures and stories a central part of their coffee break to emphasize that knowing where Fair Trade products are coming from, and the people behind the coffee and crafts, are just as important as buying Fair Trade.  In addition the event will be showcasing Hand to Hand, a local Fair Trade store featuring related merchandise.
