First Midwest Fair Trade Fest to Celebrate WFTD and Promote “Go Green, Buy Fair” in Columbus, OH

Fair Trade Certified U.S. Market Shows Some Changes in 2010 – Data Published in Fair Trade USA’s Annual Almanac

Fair Trade USA (FTUSA) published its annual guide to statistics for the 2010 U.S. market of Fair Trade Certified (FTC) products. Since FTUSA is the recognition system for about 90% of all Fair Trade goods sold in the U.S., its statistics tell important parts of the larger Fair Trade story.

Burlington, VT, to Send Off the First Fair Trade Bikers at Annual WFTD Celebration

On May 14 Fair Trade supporters will be gathering in the south end of Burlington City Hall Park for a fun-filled time to celebrate World Fair Trade Day and mark the opening of the local farmer’s market! This annual celebration will include the exciting Jeh Kulu performers, loads of display tables with information, samples and sales items. Activities include free sampling of Ben & Jerry’s Fair Trade Certified ice cream and VT Coffee Company Fair Trade coffee, a children’s coffee sack contest, some short speeches from politicians, a raffle of a great gift basket, a Fair Trade Coffee Break and a grand send off of the first ever Fair Trade Bikers, who will leave that day for Washington, DC, to promote Fair Trade all along the way! Chicago to Celebrate Becoming a Fair Trade City on May 6

Chicago Fair Trade’s celebration on May 6th will not only be a celebration for World Fair Trade Day, but will also mark the accomplishment of becoming a Fair Trade City, and the largest in the US. The event will feature more than 25 vendors selling Fair Trade gifts, coffees, chocolate and much more. Over 1000 people will gather for programs and world music at Daley Plaza. Also, on May 14-15, Chicago Fair Trade will  help thousands more people celebrate Fair Trade at the Chicago Green Festival.  More details

Peru Fair Trade Coffee Leader Explains Challenges of FLO “Fair Trade Certified” System

Santiago Paz, co-manager of CEPICAFE and manager of Norandino cooperative in Piura, Peru, wrote an insightful essay about the current state of Fair Trade Certified coffee from a producer perspective. Seeing a crisis now in world coffee markets, he calls for the “Fair Trade Certified” system to build stronger producer organizations and strengthen benefits for producers.

New Trade Model Connects Fair Trade Coffee & Farmers to Consumers Through CSA

On April12, CoffeeCSA.org launched a community supported agriculture model that allows consumers to subscribe to regular deliveries of roasted coffee from specific family farmers. It is the world’s first project to directly connect consumers with 140,000 small-scale coffee farmer entrepreneurs in Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico and Ethiopia. All CoffeeCSA coffees are Organic and Fair Trade Certified, hand-roasted in small batches, and available on the CoffeeCSA website and at over 100 independent cafés and cooperative grocery retailers.

Cooperative Coffees Products Get “Fair for Life” Certification

Cooperative Coffees announced that its products have been officially certified under IMO’s “Fair for Life Social & Fairtrade Certified” program. The program was founded in 2006 by the Institute for Marketology (IMO) and the Swiss Bio-Foundation in response to the growing need for a system that included a broader range of products and operations. “Fair for Life” complements existing certifications by incorporating standards from FLO, ISEAL, Rainforest Alliance, SA 8000 (from Social Accountability International) and ILO. Cooperative Coffees products had been Fair Trade Certified by FLO.
