Remember when you first heard the term “fair trade”?

It was probably at a boutique organic food store or maybe at a local gourmet coffee shop. Or maybe at a dinner party at the home of a local swell?

Well, in another example of how green is going mainstream, retailing giant Sam’s Club is now offering Fair Trade Certified roses to its members.

Starting this month, consumers and florists can purchase Fair Trade Certified roses online in classic colors such as red, pink, white and yellow. The roses are shipped directly from farms in Ecuador and are supplied by InBloom, a Miami-based company that represents rose farmers in Ecuador.

Fair Trade Certified standards work to improve the sustainability of local farming practices in ways that better protect the environment and the health of the workers. Proceeds from the sale of Fair Trade Certified goods are put back into schools, medical services and housing in the local community where the goods originate.

Sam’s Club Fair Trade roses are available at samsclub.com at $62.97 a dozen. A Sam’s Club Membership is required.
