Amherst Becomes Nation’s Fourth Fair Trade Town

Choteau native helps combat poverty and save a wonder by selling rice

Mary Hensley was a 22-year-old Peace Corps volunteer from Choteau, when she climbed on a military truck bound for the Philippines’ lush Cordillera Mountains.

She disembarked high in the ancient rice terraces, known to tourists as the stepping stones to the sky, or the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Little did she know she was stepping into a simmering civil war.

“They didn’t tell us these things when we got dropped off,” Hensley recalled.
But she came armed — with iodized salt.

Her mission: To fight the goiters that bulged from the necks of villagers, particularly women, mired in poverty and malnutrition. (more…)

Fair play as Alexander enters the Dragons’ Den

DOUGLAS Alexander entered the Dragons’ Den yesterday to raise awareness of fair trade in Glasgow.

The embattled minister, heavily criticised for the fiasco of the spoiled ballot papers at May’s election, visited Lourdes Secondary School to judge a contest based on the BBC2 programme, where would-be entrepreneurs bid for money from millionaire business moguls.

Students from secondary schools Hillhead, Hyndland, Lourdes, Holyrood and St Margaret Mary’s made brief presentations about the fair trade groups they have set up in the hope of winning some money for their venture. (more…)
