FTTSA responds to calls for a global fair trade tourism label

Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa is a South African based non profit initiative, working to promote equitable and sustainable tourism development.

Since 2003, FTTSA has been operating a destination-specific certification programme, based on global principles of Fair Trade as well as local development imperatives to reduce poverty and inequality within the post-apartheid context. (more…)

UM Students attend Fair Trade Convergence

Seven University of Montana students returned to Missoula late Monday night after spending the weekend at the 2008 International Fair Trade Convergence in Seattle.

Students, employees, professors, vendors and others involved with the Fair Trade movement attended classes, lectures and workshops at the University of Washington during the conference. The United Students for Fair Trade, a national network of student organizations supporting fair trade, hosted the event.  (more…)

Urban Grace holds first ever fair trade craft sale

Just in time for the start of holiday shopping, Urban Grace Church in downtown Tacoma is partnering with Trinity Presbyterian Church to hold its first-ever fair trade craft sale Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featuring a wide assortment of handmade gifts, home and holiday décor, musical instruments, jewelry and personal accessories, the sale will help skilled artisans in more than 36 countries receive a fair price for their products. The sale will also be a benefit for shoppers who will find all kinds of unique and special gifts. (more…)

Despite the economy, an Evanston fair-trade shop is doing just fine

Kaboombas are flying off the shelves at the Evanston Ten Thousand Villages shop.

The Kaboomba, also known as the Galimoto, is a hand-crafted bicycle man made from scrap material in Ghana. The $6 toy is simple but amusing and hugely popular with customers, said store manager Doug Horst.

Unusual products like these are keeping the nonprofit store busy despite the economic crisis. While month to month sales have fluctuated, performance has been fairly steady when compared with the year earlier period. (more…)

Sam’s Club(R) Introduces Fair Trade Certified(TM) Wine

Sam’s Club members will find a new choice in the wine aisles this month with the launch of the chain’s first Fair Trade Certified(TM) wine, Neu Direction(TM), a 100 percent Malbec from the renowned winegrowing region of Lujan de Cuyo near Mendoza, Argentina. The wine is one of only a handful to receive this status in the inaugural year of the groundbreaking Fair Trade Wine certification program in the U.S. (more…)
