WREXHAM will play its part in a world record attempt this weekend when the town hosts a fair trade picnic.
The aim is to have more than 8,000 people enjoying a picnic across Wales this Saturday which would break the world record set in Tenerife, Spain, in 1999.
The Wrexham picnic will take place in Queens Square and organisers are encouraging local people to get involved.
Wales’ Fairtrade development officer Mark Richardson explained the thinking behind the Big Fairtrade Picnic.
He said: “We hope this will be a fun way for people to get together and get Fairtrade into their shopping habits at the same time.
“There are many Fairtrade products that can be added to recipes. By regularly buying Fairtrade we can help producers make big improvements to their lives.
“For example, cocoa producers in a Fairtrade co-operative in Ghana have installed wells to get access to safe drinking water.”
Wrexham Fair Trade Coalition chairman Chris Pilsbury said: “Wales is aiming to become the world’s first fair trade nation and as Wrexham was the first fair trade county within Wales we are keen to play our part.”
Wrexham’s Fair Trade Coalition and young people from local schools will be hosting the local picnic event.
The event will run from 11amto 2pm, and organisers would welcome people joining in by bringing their own picnic or even just taking the opportunity to purchase some fair trade goods on the square.
